Reactive LED Ski helmet! Woo! I’ve been workin Reactive LED Ski helmet! Woo!

I’ve been working on and off throughout the winter on a wearable WS2812B array for ski helmets and this is the result! Designs were 3D printed using Ninjaflex for durability and snap fits to attach to the back of any helmet using a goggle strap. The final version used an ESP8266 with an MPU6050 running either WLED or custom code. Next plans are to waterproof electronics and add more reactive behaviors like turn signals.

With the end of 2021, I’m posting more clips fro With the end of 2021, I’m posting more clips from my capstone project! Dubbed “Swarm Carrier”, the 3-year effort consisted of various projects to study deployable, autonomous drone swarms. The result was a carrier system capable of deploying and reintegrating multiple sUAS in flight!

Swipe for videos of aerial deployments where child vehicles are deployed from a carrier and autonomously correct their attitude! Other videos show a reintegration of child vehicles via landings on the upper surface of the carrier.

Overall, this project was an insanely immersive learning experience and would’ve been impossible to accomplish without my team: @blucheck, @noterik6, @maito_taael, @mchaleblake, and @josh_a_field as well as many other students from AerospaceNU and Northeastern University.

During summer 2021, myself, John Buczek, Michael Tang, Blake McHale, Erik Little, and Blake McHale brought our passion for aerial robotics projects to Northeastern University's Capstone Design Program. In doing so, we turned years of research into methods of deployment and control of multi-vehicle systems into an official project: Swarm Carrier.

After six months of analysis, design, software development, and validation, our Capstone Design team successfully completed a system capable of autonomously transporting, deploying, and reintegrating groups of drones from a larger, carrier platform. Our team was subsequently awarded the Gorlov Prize for Innovation for scoring first place out of 29 teams during presentations.

I'd like to personally express my gratitude towards our advisors: Andrew Gouldstone, Bridget Smyser, and Mehdi Abedi. During and throughout the years leading up to Capstone, they provided every resource to feed our success. I'd also like to thank our sponsors T-MOTOR, Tyto Robotics, and Rock West Composites for their generous support of the project.

Lastly, without the countless hours dedicated by the students of Aerospace NU AIAA, Swarm Carrier would have never been possible. Thanks to all the leads, members, and E-Boards who have seen this project through!
